2024 Plant Competition
The Annual Plant Competition is always a great way to celebrate the coming end of summer!
Here were our three contending plants.
We welcomed Victoria Brookes as a new guest judge, with Cindy T. being there as her mentor.
Victoria did a great job (along with Ron K. assisting) on figuring out how to choose the winners.
This year, first place in ALL three places didn’t require a second thought!
All the members attending were simply blown away by the fantastic plants that Melanie G. entered!
She deserved every “first place ribbon”! (Kudos, Melanie, you have earned a Triple Gold Star in everyone’s book!)
Fuchsia:1st place – Melanie G., 2Nd – Elaine D., 3rd – Nora B., Random draw – Ron K.
Begonia: 1st place – Melanie G., 2nd – Nora B., 3rd – Ron, Random draw – Lidy K.
Pelargonium: 1st place – Melanie G., 2nd – Elaine D., 3rd – Elsie L., Random draw – Ron K.
We took some time for a discussion:
Melanie G. noted that her 3 winning plants were all grown on the south side. They received mid day full sun, with shade in the morning and evening.
Lidy noted the Executive had hoped that the chosen fuchsia variety would have had flowers that opened more.
Elaine D. noted that her 2nd place pelargonium had been grown completely under fluorescent lights in the basement. Elsie L.’s 3rd place pelargonium had been moved into her greenhouse.
Nora B. noted that she was delighted to earn 2nd and 3rd place ribbons as her plants were faithfully watered by her husband but received minimal TLC this year.
